LRF Rigs
and some of their uses
The Texas Rig
The Texas rig is simple to tie and is a very effective when fishing soft plastic lures in heavy weed cover it can help with getting snagged up or constantly catching and dragging weed. Made up of just 4 main components, an offset hook, an inline cone/bullet sinker, a glass bead and a float stop.
Rig presentation is very important. The weight of the inline sinker should be matched to the depth of water you are fishing. A good rule of thumb is 1 gram for every foot of water you’re fishing. For example use a 5 gram weight for 5 foot of water. Also remember to take into consideration the conditions, if you are fishing in windy conditions or there is an undertow, then increasing the weight of the sinker is required to ensure the rig stays on the bottom. It also helps aid casting and bite detection.
There are many types of hooks that can be used however the most commonly used hook for the Texas rig is an offset wide gape hook. The reason for the wide gape is to provide a better hook up rate and avoid snagging and dragging weed when fishing over heavy cover. The lure is hooked through the body; the wider gape provides more exposure of the hook point during the bite when using wider bodied lures.
